RTI & Special Education Teachers

A big question sweeping school using an RTI model across the country is
where special education teacher fit into the school-wide RTI model.
Special Education teachers have historically only been able to work with
students who have been classified as having a disability and have a
current IEP. Recently, special education teachers have been able to
give direct interventions to "Tier III / Red Zone" students and to work
with general education teacher in efforts to provide supports to all
students.

In addition, special education teachers have great skills in monitoring
students' progress. Progress monitoring is an essential component of

Enriching Education with Social Media

There's no doubt about it, social media is here to stay. Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, LinkedIn and the like are dominating the hours spent online and look to only be increasing in usage. Mashable has a great article about making the case for social media in schools that's definitely worth checking out. Using these tools can bring students into a more engaging relationship with teachers, other students and with their coursework. Additionally, teachers can use these channels to create more engaging and open lines of communication with parents, especially with children who are struggling and need extra support.

The best thing about most of these social media tools is that they're FREE! In today's economy, where many schools are forced into budget cuts, teachers may have to step outside of their normal comfort zone to reach students in a new way. GRĀPS Saves You Time and Money

It appears that in these difficult economic times, most school districts are facing budget cuts.  School districts across the country are attempting to implement Response to Intervention (RtI) models, while having difficulty finding the money and resources needed to sustain such an implementation initiative.  However, there are many free resources that school districts can access.  GRĀPS, a simple to use progress monitoring tool, allows users to collect, analyze and graph student progress monitoring data.  GRĀPS is free and can be found at www.RtIGraphs.com.

Many schools are currently using CBM probes to collect universal screening data or benchmark data on students. GRĀPS is a free way to monitor students' progress between the benchmarks and for schools to determine students' response to intervention by measuring their rate of improvement.  GRĀPS can also be used to predict if students are going to meet the benchmarks.

RtIGraphs.com Is Officially Live

We are very proud to announce that www.RtIGraphs.com is now live!!! We have been working on GRĀPS for the past 4 years and are finally ready to release it to educators across the country.  GRĀPS was developed because, as school psychologists, we felt a need for a tool that allowed educators to track and analyze student progress with easy and efficiency.  When we first started, we were using graph paper and pencils, and trying to calculate students’ Rate of Improvement (RoI) by hand.  Now, 4 years later, we think that we have developed a tool that will be very useful to all educators using an RTI model and/or tracking student progress.  Please leave us feedback via this blog, the website, email, twitter or facebook so that we can continue to improve this tool to make it as user-friendly as possible.  Thank you very much and feel free to share this website.

More information about GRĀPS:

The Graphic Representation of Academic Progress System (GRĀPS) is a data storage and analysis program, on an Excel platform, that can be used with any CBM or assessment that produces quantitative data. GRĀPS can be used by administrators, teachers and Student Assistance Teams to easily store and analyze data. This will help to determine if the current programs or interventions are effective, or  if there is a need for modification, which is one of the foundations of Response to Intervention (RtI).  GRĀPS can be used by special education teachers to provide data, based on the student's own performance, that is needed to develop present levels and meaningful goals on an IEP.  Teachers and special education teachers can also use GRĀPS to easily develop progress reports for IEP teams and parents.  School psychologists can use GRĀPS to assist in determining eligibility for special education and to incorporate graphs of RtI data into their psychoeducational evaluation reports.

The GRĀPS is able to:

  • store individual student progress monitoring data
  • automatically calculate the student’s growth (using either a Linear Regression model or “Last Minus First” method)
  • display appropriate growth rates
  • develop goals relative to the individual student’s baseline level
  • display this information in numeric forms
  • automatically displays information in a graphic form with goal line, trend line, aim line and benchmark line
  • convert individual student progress monitoring data into IEP goals and objectives
  • display data for progress reports for IEP teams, teachers, and parents
